My grandma saved my life. I mean this literally. She saved me with one sentence. “You have to get out of here Benjye.” That was the one sentence that changed everything for me. It was a year or so after I graduated from high school. I left Williamsburg and ended up back in Weirton with my mom. I was working as a bus boy at that time. My mom and I had an argument, so I went to my grandmother’s house to get away for a little while. That’s when she spoke those fateful words. My life would be a lot different if she hadn’t said those words to me. I doubt if there would have been basic training, AIT, college degrees, a wife & family in Virginia, or teaching positions. Who knows where I would have ended up? I was lost. She found me. She passed away this week. I hadn’t seen her in a very long time, but I never forgot those words. Thank you Grandma. Thank you.
