I got stung.....

I hate bees. I have been stung before, and it hurts. I remember when I was on a school field trip when I taught in North Carolina and we were in the woods. I walked over a hole that was full of bees and they stung me. It hurt. I yelled fudge. At the end of the school year, some kids gave me a box of fudge. So, I guess good things come out of bad things sometimes. This weekend I rode with the bees. It hurt. Again. My cycling friend Sharon sent me an invite on Facebook to do a ride with Team Killer Bees. I remember the Bees from when I was riding with TNT a few years back. I had heard from everyone that the Bees are fast, and ride very hard. Their jerseys are intimidating as well. Even though it is very small, the killer bee is scary. Ok, everything is scary to me. I was watching Halloween last night for about the 5000th time. I actually jumped during a not so scary part, and Brenda made me turn the channel since she didn’t want me to kick her while sleeping. Back to my bee story. Well, come to find out the ride was around James City County. James City County has some pretty good hills. They may not seem so bad when driving, but on a bike, they are no fun. It was a little fun when I finished, but while laboring not so much. There are a lot of people getting ready to ride. I see a group of people that are “hardcore” riders. Those are the ones with the really nice bikes and the slick clothes. My bike is kinds nice, but my clothes are not very slick. Wal-Mart, except for my goofy looking shoes and my bright neon jacket. My jacket keeps me warm no matter the temperature so far. The “hardcore” riders ride at an ‘A’ pace, which really means, “Dang! I can’t keep up with them! They are fast!” And they were fast, since I only saw them a couple of times at rest stops along the way. I have had some very hard rides before, and this one is right up there with the hardest of them. Hills, hills, and more hills, and then there were a couple more hills. Was it like Fletcher? No, but since I’m trying to get back into the cycling thing, it was difficult. I did finish the 50 miles in 3 ½ hours. I was tired. My legs are still sore. The best thing about the ride is the fact that the Bees were really nice and didn’t leave me in a ditch somewhere. They treated me well and gave me encouragement as well. It’s good to know that some bees aren’t mean at all. Maybe I can end up being a Bee in the end. You could be a Bee too, but you better bring your big boy or girl britches if you want to ride with them. That’s for sure.

Please, help if you can. The walk is in a week and a half. http://www.curesearchwalk.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=467895&lis=1&kntae467895=6D451B8F546C44FB8CB5002CBF9586C8&supId=336898878

Help.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1LREetnVZA&feature=related
I need your help. I need $5 from you. You may be asking, “Why does he need $5?”, or “Why does he need my $5? I ain’t made outta money!”, or “His broke behind don’t have his own $5?” No, I actually don’t have $5, since I didn’t get my allowance for this month but that is beside the point. I need your $5 to help cure childhood cancer. I know the economy is horrible right now. I’m trying to work as many jobs as I can to make some extra cash myself. I was going to give breakdancing classes, but I was told, “Don’t do that, you’ll get jacked up!” and “Who wants to take classes with your old behind?” The classes were only going to be $135.00 an hour. (I’m trying to get an IPAD to help with my swag so don’t hate on the price.) I was told that was too much so I dropped the price to $134.99! It’s a bargain because you also get a Ginsu knife & a booty pop! If you order now, I will double your order! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA3oRP-qmcM&feature=related
Sorry, I got lost for a second. I know times are tough for a lot of people, but $5 is all we are asking for right now. Most of us spend that each month on apps for our cell phones or while at a drive thru restaurant. Heck it’s cheaper than a coffee and a muffin at Starbucks. If you gave $5 a month for a year, that would be $60.00. I know my overpriced cable bill costs way more than that. By the way, Cox High Speed Internet should be called Cox Turtle Speed Internet. I figure if 100 of my facebook friends give $5, and they tell 1 of their friends that gives us $1000.00. Then, let’s say the 5 people who read my blog give, we have $1025.00. I know people read Amaya’s site (http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/amayarose ),so if 100 of them give $5 that makes $1525.00. They decided to tell one of their friends and we have $2025. That is a great start.

Of course, you can always give more if you would like, but $5 will do. Your $5 could lead to breakthrough that is needed to end childhood cancer. I have seen too many young people die from this wretched disease. Research is the key to solving the puzzle. Maybe the money will help with new drugs that will be used specifically for children and not adults. Please, help if you can. I understand that it is your money and you can do with it as you please. I have no problem with that, but my family and so many others need your help. The government doesn’t do enough, so money from family & friends is needed. I will not be upset if you don’t give, but know I will continue to ask for your help every chance I get. I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t so important to me and so many others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rbMMH8-vR8

Brenda & I are doing the CureSearch Walk on Nov. 5th.  We are trying to raise money for it.  The group funds & supports children’s cancer research & provides information & resources to all those affected by children’s cancer.  I miss TNT and enjoyed it immensely, but ALL of the money we raise for CureSearch goes to children’s cancer research.  I will most likely go and do something for TNT again in the future, but right now we are focusing on Childhood Cancer Research.  After this I will be doing several other things trying to raise more money.  This wont’ be the last time you hear of me and raising money.
Amaya is in the lower right hand corner of the picture.  Not sure if I said that before or not. http://www.curesearchwalk.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=467895&lis=1&kntae467895=6D451B8F546C44FB8CB5002CBF9586C8&supId=336898878

1. I’ve started running again. At least a couple of times so far with someone from work at the Y. So, I can’t get too excited until I keep it up for a while. She runs really fast. And for a long time. I’m used to going 20 minutes and maybe doing a mile and a half. I have to step my game up. She has been smoking me. Hopefully, I get better. It’s kind of embarrassing, but I know I’ m not going to run unless I know someone else is waiting for me. If it was in the street and the treadmill someone would arrest her for a public beat down.

2. I guess no NBA means, more NHL. Penguins #1!

3. Can I get at least an 82-80 season Pirates, please? At least they’re not in last place.

4. Steelers are making me very nervous right now.

5. This rain stinks. I won’t be able to get on my bike until this weekend. I’m hoping Sunday is the day! I miss my bike after not riding it for a LONG time.

6. Amaya has an MRI next week. I’m really nervous. Not sure how it’s going to come out. Sometimes it’s hard to let go and let God deal with it. I will try my best next week.

7. WVU got HAMMERED by LSU. It wasn’t very pretty.

8. ODU football did well until the 2nd half. Not bad against a team that was in last year’s championship game for FCS football. Darn Blue Hens!

9. Both of my fantasy teams have not won a game. Not looking good right now. ]

10. Bills and Lions in the Super Bowl? It would be crazy if that happened.

11. 20 years since the Low End Theory by Tribe came out, CLASSIC MATERIAL!

Twitter for Teachers? Really?.....

When people first tell you about all the technology out there you kind of scoff at it. I know I was not ready for all of this stuff. How can this help me? Are people really doing this stuff or are they wasting my time AGAIN? Why are they making me look at this stuff? I don’t have the time! CSI is on! What if I don’t want to change? I don’t like change! Leave me alone! You can keep your RSS feeds & PLPs! I don’t want any of it.
As my wife will tell you, of course I was wrong. There is so much great stuff out there. I used to use twitter to follow famous people and post stuff about the other kids/young adults that are fighting cancer. It took me a year to find out that twitter can give you so much information about the field of education. I will still post about childhood cancer & music, but I will also look for information to help me become a better educator. There are so many links to so many different types of information from teachers and organizations. It can make your head hurt if you look at it long enough. But it hurts in a good way since I’m learning. It’s exciting because it can open so many new avenues for me. I will need to sit down and take some time to sift through all of it. It’s amazing how many links have popped up after only two days.  Who knew twitter was part of the new revolution in education?  That’s what I get for being the number one grouchy pants.

#plp-pregame

I am writing this type of post because I am taking an online course and they wanted me to write a blog about what I hope to learn.  It’s by this group called PLP.  I guess what I hope to learn is what am I missing in the world of technology.  I know about facebook, twitter, ning, diigo, and RSS feeds.  To tell the truth I only found out about RSS feeds, diigo, & ning a couple of months ago.  The problem is at one time I thought these things were a majority of the things that you can use on the internet.  Hmmm….boy was I wrong.  There are so many different things to use out there that it can make you head spin.  A part of me is nervous about not knowing about these sites.  It really makes you feel not very smart.  So far I like doing this online and I have learned a lot after a short time.  Hopefully, by the end I will truly understand what I have been missing.

REFOCUSED!

So we started with an earthquake, and now a hurricane. This has been an interesting week to say the least. Other than most likely losing power and having 2 kids drive me crazy, the worst part about Irene this weekend is the fact I won’t be able to ride outside. It will have to wait until next weekend if they ever clean up the stuff on the parkway. Can’t wait to get back out there again.

I have made a decision. The last few months have been stressful in a lot of different ways. I stopped being super vigilant in my eating and exercise and my pants are a little tighter so it’s time to get my head in the game and kick it up a notch. (Clichés of the day) Alas, I am going to begin raising money in a big way. I think saying alas is pretty cool. Curesearch ( http://www.curesearch.org/ ) will be the main organization. Mostly stuff to keep me from gaining a lot of weight while I go through my mid-life crisis. Biking, runs, walks and stuff like that. So the ice cream eating contest is out the window. That really stinks. I would crush a lot of people in a cone championship.  I’ll have more information in the near future. While I figure out what I am going to do please help out these great people by donating if you could to their team.

Grandma

My grandma saved my life. I mean this literally. She saved me with one sentence. “You have to get out of here Benjye.” That was the one sentence that changed everything for me. It was a year or so after I graduated from high school. I left Williamsburg and ended up back in Weirton with my mom.  I was working as a bus boy at that time.  My mom and I had an argument, so I went to my grandmother’s house to get away for a little while. That’s when she spoke those fateful words. My life would be a lot different if she hadn’t said those words to me. I doubt if there would have been basic training, AIT, college degrees, a wife & family in Virginia, or teaching positions. Who knows where I would have ended up? I was lost. She found me. She passed away this week. I hadn’t seen her in a very long time, but I never forgot those words. Thank you Grandma. Thank you.

the first 30.....

How l lost the weight…..

1. It has not been easy. As a matter of fact, it hasn’t been that fun at times. But it was something that I had to do especially when your doctor tells you that you need to lose some weight or you may be in trouble, you deal with it. I want to be here for my kids as they are growing up. If I’m unhealthy or dead it won’t happen that way. I’ll be sick and can’t play or run or do anything at all.

2. Get up and go. I go to the gym early at least 5-7 days of the week. Most days I’m up at 5 am. I know me. I ain’t going in the afternoon to do anything unless I absolutely have to get it done in the afternoon. It’s easy to find something else to do instead of going to the gym. It was just weights and spin, and now I have added running. Hopefully, I can keep losing.

3. Stop buying big clothes. I had a pair of 36 waist pants. I gave them away since they were so big. Now I can wear pants that I haven’t worn in years. I have shirts that I can wear now as well. A lot of my clothes are way too big.

4. Eat. I try to eat 6 times a day. And I try to eat as healthy as possible. Fruit, vegetables, lean meats (turkey/chicken), a little red meat, and protein shakes. I’m hungry all the time. ALL THE TIME. I don’t think I’m getting enough calories so I will need to eat more, but so far it has worked.

5. Say no when I feel like saying no and say yes when I feel like saying yes. If I want a cookie, I’m going to eat a cookie. Same for burgers, cake, and donuts. If I want it I eat it, just not a lot of it. This way I’m not trying to fight my urges all time. It’s hard to say, “I’m never going to eat cookies again.” Guess what, I’m going to eat a cookie, just not a whole pack of them. Moderation is the key.

6. Tell your family to not be nice to you. I wish my wife would have told me, “Dang, you big dude!” Instead of not telling me at all. Amaya told me I was pretty big a few times, but I didn’t listen. I looked at last year’s softball team picture. It was pretty gross. I look like a big Easter peanut M & M. Bright yellow!!!

7. Believe in yourself. Know that it will take some TIME to lose the weight. Longer than you think. Longer than they tell you on any commercial. 2 pounds a week is good. Don’t look for huge gains because you will be disappointed. That’s been my problem for years. I wanted it to happen too fast. Now I know it won’t happen quickly. I have 6 months to lose 30 pounds. That is my final & ultimate goal.

8. If you miss a day, you miss. Get over it. Life gets in the way. Days will be missed. Try to get back to it the very next day possible. That’s what I did. I did get mad at myself, but I did the best that I could at that moment. All you can do is your best.
